2025 Scholarship Topic

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has been a key regulator of the financial services industry, including debt collection, since its inception in the 2010 Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.  Recent legal challenges and administrative actions have sought to limit the CFPB’s authority, raising questions about its future role in financial regulation. How do these changes, and/or the threat of changes, impact the debt collection industry? Are they ultimately beneficial or harmful, and why?
