Marvin Dang

Marvin Dang is a partner of Nelson & Kennard, a multi-state law firm based in Sacramento, California. He co-manages N&K’s Hawaii office which opened in Honolulu in 2020 and which focuses on collections. Separately, Mr. Dang is the Managing Member of the Law Offices of Marvin S. C. Dang, LLLC in Honolulu, Hawaii. The firm, which he started in 1981, focuses on foreclosures, lobbying, legislation, governmental relations, real estate, and estate planning.

Admitted to the Hawaii State Bar in 1978, Mr. Dang earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. He received his B.A. from the University of Hawaii.

Mr. Dang was elected as a state legislator in the Hawaii State House of Representatives in 1982 and served as Assistant Minority Floor Leader. He’s now a registered lobbyist. For 11 years in the 1980s and 1990s, Mr. Dang was Senior Vice President and in-house Counsel of an FDIC-insured Hawaii financial institution.

NCBA President Steve Markoff appointed Mr. Dang to be Parliamentarian (an officer position) for 2022-2023. He previously served as Parliamentarian from 2019-2022 and 2015-2017 and he was an NCBA Director from 2017-2019. Mr. Dang is the first Asian American lawyer to be an NCBA officer.

With the Collection Law Section of the Hawaii State Bar Association, Mr. Dang is the Immediate Past Chair and serves on the Board of Directors. Since 1992 he’s been on the Hawaii State Judiciary’s Committee on District Court Civil Rules and Forms having been appointed by the Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court. Mr. Dang was a per diem Hearings Officer with the Hawaii Judiciary.

Mr. Dang was elected as Secretary of the American Bar Association for a 3-year term (2023-2026). He’s the first Asian American lawyer to be an ABA officer in its 145-year history. Mr. Dang has served on the ABA Board of Governors since 2020. He’s a member of the ABA House of Delegates and was on the Steering Committee of the Nominating Committee.
